It is that time of year again to register your child(ren) for Religious Education Classes at St. Joseph&rsquo;s. Last year was a very trying time for the catechists and students, but with everyone&rsquo;s cooperation, we made it through with flying colors!
As of today, we have not received any guidelines from the Diocese, so we will begin classes with no specific restrictions. We will, however, continue to have hand sanitizer available in every classroom; masks are optional.
We are planning to have a Religious Education Registration Pizza &amp; Sundae Bar following 5:00 PM Mass on Saturday, August 28, in the Parish Social Hall. You may register your child(ren) and meet their catechist. You may pick up your Family Registration Packet that evening or, if you are unable to come on the 28th, please call the Parish Office (<a href="tel:(260) 824-1380">(260) 824-1380</a>) and make arrangements to pick up your packet.
Religious Education Classes will begin on Sunday, September 12, 2021, from 8:30-9:45 a.m. If your child did not come to Religious Education Classes last year, please contact the Parish Office, as special arrangements or additional classes may need to be scheduled to help catch them up from last year.

On Sunday, August 15th, the Church will celebrate the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This solemnity is yearly observed as a holy day of obligation. As this celebration, however, falls on Sunday, the Assumption will take the place of the Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time. Our Sunday Mass schedule for the holy day will remain the same (Saturday Vigil Mass - 5 PM; Sunday Masses - 7:30 AM &amp; 10 AM).

Proceeds supports Coats for Kids Program. The Knights of Columbus developed the Coats for Kids program, which allows councils across North America the opportunity to put their faith into action and purchase new winter coats at a discount for children in need in their communities. More than 500,000 new winter coats have been distributed throughout the United States and Canada since the program began in 2009.
Locally, the council at St. Joseph Bluffton has donated winter coats to each of the Wells County schools over the last several years. Most recently, coats have also been donated to Family Centered Services in Bluffton.
The Coats for Kids program is one of many programs that support the Knights of Columbus principles of Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and Patriotism. Thank you for your support.

Bishop Rhoades has asked all parishes in our diocese to resume public Masses the weekend of May 23rd/24th&nbsp;(the Feast of the Ascension of the Lord).

In addition to this request, the Bishop has also provided all parishes of the diocese with a thorough listing of prudential directives to be implemented in helping to ensure the physical safety, health, and well-being of all those who will be attending public Masses.
The obligation to attend Sunday Mass remains suspended for the foreseeable future, meaning those who are at high risk for infection of the Coronavirus or those who do not yet feel that it would be prudent for them to return to larger public gathering are invited and encouraged to remain at home.
To help facilitate those who cannot yet join us in person, St. Joseph's will continue to broadcast its liturgies on our parish website and through our social media.

As the Governor&rsquo;s executive order classifies churches as &ldquo;Essential Businesses and Operations&rdquo;, our church building itself will remain open at all hours* for those who desire to spend time in private and individual prayer before our Eucharistic Lord. Confessions will continue to be offered by appointment and at announced times.** If coming to the Church to pray, please be mindful of social distancing practices and keep at least six feet of space between yourself and others.

**Fr. David will be offering a &ldquo;Drive-Thru&rdquo; Confession this Saturday, March 28th, from 3-5 PM. What does this mean? Fr. David is sitting under the portico outside of the Church. If you are en-route on essential travel and are stopping at the Church, please drive under the portico for Confession. If there are multiple people in the car, we will step inside the main Church doors to preserve the confidentiality of the Sacrament. We are to be mindful of acting prudently at this time and observing all social distancing requirements.

In light of the current national emergency, Bishop Rhoades has cancelled all public liturgies in the diocese until further notice. This includes all Masses, public confession times, adoration, etc... The main aim at the suspension of public Masses throughout the Diocese is to protect public health and well-being by preventing the gathering of large crowds (as requested by health officials).

Out of concern for those who may be susceptible to the coronavirus, especially the elderly and those with compromised immune systems, Bishop Rhoades has dispensed the Faithful from our Sunday Mass Obligation for the next three weekends (March 15, 22, &amp; 29).*
What does this mean for St. Joseph's? All Masses will still occur as scheduled. If, however, you feel unwell or unable to attend Mass over the next three Sundays, there is no obligation to do so. (Similar to our winter weather policy, an obligation assumes what is asked of us is possible. If we are ill or are legitimately concerned of being in large crowds given the heightened possibly of transmission of illness at this time, then we are physically incapable of fulfilling the obligation and are dispensed from doing so.)

In addition to our normal precautions announced last weekend and considering Bishop Rhoades announcement, we will be cancelling our Religious Education classes (K-12) in between Masses this weekend (March 15). Please keep in mind that Religious Education was already scheduled off for both March 22 and 29 due to the area schools being on spring break. Classes will resume on Sunday, April 3.
Our normally scheduled Lenten services (Soup Supper, Stations of the Cross, Adoration times, Confession times) will continue to be offered as scheduled unless stated otherwise.
Let us continue to pray at this time for the sick, for doctors, nurses, and health-care workers, and for an end to this illness. May we ask the intercession of St. Damien of Molokai to intercede for us before the throne of our Lord in heaven.

Beginning on Thursday, January 16th, the program will run for 11-weeks. Alpha is a course which introduces the basics of the Christian faith through a series of talks and discussions.
The evening begins with a meal at 6:30 PM, a video series at 7:00 PM, and small group discussions over the video series at 7:30 PM. Childcare is provided.

Throughout January, we will offer a four-week book study of "The Bible is a Catholic Book", starting Thursday, January 9th, from 7-8 PM in the Parish Conference Room.
(Due to the Thursday evening ALPHA Program, a second group is meeting for the book study on Fridays from 5:30-6:30 PM in the Parish Conference Room.)
In this quick-paced book, he provides wonderful and biblical-based insights into the inspired and historical development of the Sacred Scriptures. It is our hope that, through this gift, each of us can gain a deeper understanding of the Sacred Scriptures and our Church, who our Lord Himself has entrusted to safe-guard and interpret the Sacred Scriptures.
*Jimmy Akin is a convert to the Faith and, over the past 25 years, has become a well-known author and is also a weekly guest on the global radio program Catholic Answers Live.

January Book Study

This Christmas, St. Joseph's gifted Jimmy Akin&rsquo;s* "The Bible is a Catholic Book", copies of which are still available in the narthex.

On Thursday, January 9th, we will offer a "Teaching Mass" in the Church from 5:30 - 6:30 PM.
This event is being offered as a part of our Rite of Christian Initiations for Adults (RCIA) Sessions and all are invited to join us to learn more about the Mass.
Note: A &ldquo;Teaching Mass&rdquo; is not an actual Mass. Our daily Mass that day will be offered at it&rsquo;s normal time: 8:00 AM. Instead, a &ldquo;Teaching Mass&rdquo; is a chance for us to walk-through, ask questions about, and explain the various parts of the Mass in a more in-depth manner.

On Thursday, January 9th, we will offer a "Teaching Mass" in the Church from 5:30 - 6:30 PM.

This Saturday, November 2nd, the Church commemorates All Souls Day. For the Commemoration of All Soul&rsquo;s Day, we will offer Masses on Saturday, Nov. 2nd, at 8 AM and Noon. (Note: The Noon Mass will be a Requiem Low Mass offered in the Extraordinary Form, meaning the prayers will be prayed in Latin. Missalettes will be provided with Latin-English translations for the Noon Mass.)

On Friday, October 4th, the Church will celebrate the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi. St. Francis founded the Franciscan Order in the early 13th Century with the charism (or spiritual gift) of serving the poor. St. Francis is well known for his great love for all of God&rsquo;s creation, especially animals.
As is tradition on this day, we will offer the Blessing of Animals and Pets. This blessing will take place on Friday, Oct. 4th, at 4 PM under the front entrance of the Church. All are welcome to join us!

In better understanding and fostering our relationships with the Saints, we are able to grow even deeper in our relationship with the Lord. All are welcome to join us.

On this day, the Church celebrates Mary, the Mother of our Lord Jesus Christ, being taken up, body and soul, into heaven. This ancient teaching of Christ&rsquo;s Church, prefigured in both Enoch (Gen. 5:24; Hebrews 11:5) and Elijah (2 Kings 2:11), sees God&rsquo;s work in Mary brought to completion here on earth as she is brought into eternity. It is a day worth celebrating as it gives us joyful hope that we, too, may follow Mary&rsquo;s path that points us always to her Son, Jesus, and to His Heavenly Kingdom.

The Knights of Columbus Council 7555 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Bluffton is holding an all-you-can-eat fish fry on Friday, April 5th from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.
The menu will include all you can eat "Dan's Fish Fry" fish, and a serving of cheesy potatoes, green beans and desserts.&nbsp; Prices for the dinner are: adults $10; children ages 6012 $6; and children 5 and under are free.&nbsp; There will also be a drive-thru service available at the church, located at 1300 N Main St., Bluffton, IN.
Proceeds will be put towards Pro-Live and New Evangelization.

This Tuesday, March 19, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of St. Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary. St. Joseph, entrusted as the foster-father of our Lord, is recognized as a special patron for all fathers and for the universal Church (which is the Body of Christ). As he is also our parish namesake, every solemnity honoring St. Joseph serves as a special patronal feast day for our parish and is a day worthy of celebrating. To celebrate St. Joseph&rsquo;s Day, we will offer a special evening Mass this Tuesday, March 19, at 7 p.m., followed by a Sundae Bar in the Parish Social Hall after Mass.
As St. Joseph&rsquo;s Day is a solemnity, a celebration of the greatest importance, we are welcome to relax our Lenten observances on this day. We see this practice of celebration reflected even in our liturgy as this is one of only two days during the Lenten Season at which we will recite the Gloria together at Mass (the other being the Annunciation of the Lord on March 25). Outside of these two days, the Gloria, a hymn of praise, will not rise again from our lips during this penitential season until we rejoice together at the Easter Vigil. Following St. Joseph&rsquo;s Day, we once again wholeheartedly resume our Lenten practices of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving as we continue in these forty days of penance.

The Most Reverend Kevin C. Rhoades, Bishop of Fort Wayne-South Bend, leads the celebration of an installation Mass on Saturday to recognize Father David Violi, left, as the new pastor at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Bluffton.
